Employee Procedures

  1. Read the policy at Competency Based Progression Policy.

  2. Inform your supervisor of your desire to lodge an application, and make an appointment with your supervisor for a Performance Planner Interview. During the Performance Planner Interview the applicability of Competency Based Progression to your current position will be discussed.

  3. If the supervisor indicates that the competencies required in the position warrant progression through the Competency Bar, go to step 4. If not, continue on with your Performance Planner Interview.

  4. Your supervisor will indicate which competencies are required for the position and give you a copy of the form with these competencies ticked.

  5. Discuss a time frame for the progression with your supervisor. Consider the length of time it will take for you to acquire and consistently perform the competencies (if not already doing so) and the time it will take to gather evidence. As a guide the interview should occur within 2-3 months after the Performance Planner Interview. Your supervisor will discuss the evidence required during the interview.

  6. During the Performance Planner Interview you should negotiate with your supervisor the opportunity to perform the required competencies (if this does not already exist within your position).

  7. If you do not possess one or more of the required competencies, both on and off the job training should be considered and noted on your Career Development Plan in your Performance Planner.

  8. In order to demonstrate eligibility for Competency Based Progression, you must consistently perform the required competencies as part of your position. Gather evidence to support your claim of competence against the elements. Refer to the Evidence Guidelines on the Web at Evidence Guidelines.

  9. Make an appointment with your supervisor for an interview. This appointment time should be consistent with the time frame agreed upon in your Performance Planner Interview.

  10. During the interview:

    • Tick the appropriate box of the "Employee's Verification of Attainment of Standard" on the form.
    • Present and discuss the evidence tendered to demonstrate performance in each of the elements specified (refer Evidence Guidelines).
    • Sign the "Certification by Employee" declaration. Your supervisor will tick the appropriate boxes of the "Supervisors Verification" and sign the "Certification by Supervisor" section before forwarding the form to your Dean/Director.

  11. If your application is not approved by your supervisor, the application will be returned to you.

  12. If your application is not approved, you are able to reapply at a later stage. Discuss an appropriate timeframe for reapplication with your supervisor, who will note this on your Performance Planner.

  13. If your application is not approved by the Dean/Director, your supervisor will be notified in writing within seven (7) days of lodging the application. The supervisor will discuss the reasons of non-approval with you.

  14. If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the application you may refer to the Review Process in the policy document, at Competency Based Progression Policy.
