INTRODUCTION
This award scheme is intended to encourage and recognise
outstanding and exceptional service or work performance
of members of the General Staff. The recipients will
have the option of receiving this award in the form
of an amount of money, (tax free) as determined by the
Committee, or attendance at courses or conferences of
their own choice, to the equivalent value. Consideration
may also be given to using the award for payment towards
the provision of equipment.
All recipients will also receive an inscribed certificate,
to be awarded to the employee at the University Staff
Awards ceremony in the middle of each year. Up to six
awards will be available annually. Awards will only
be issued for nominations which demonstrate exceptional
and outstanding achievements. Any or all awards need
not be given in any one year.

ELIGIBILITY
All members of the general staff will be eligible.
Both individuals and groups are eligible to receive
the award. A group may consist of a work team or unit
who have worked together to achieve a particular successful
outcome. The amount of the award will be divided between
the members of the group. As a guideline, nominated
units would not normally exceed six members. Nominations
are not encouraged for staff where recognition such
as accelerated progression, promotion and re-classification,
performance bonus or any other such acknowledgement
has already been made directly within the currency of
the nominating period.

CRITERIA
Generally, the award will be for a single outstanding
success in the workplace in the 12 months preceding
the closing date. It will not recognize satisfactory
or good performance only. The nomination will meet one
or more of the following criteria:
· An outstanding and exceptional achievement
or success, with a demonstrated value;
· Outstanding service to clients of the Unit/Department/University,
with a definable benefit to the clients;
· An outstanding or novel initiative which has
been implemented, and has a demonstrated value;
· Changes or improvements to work practices
of a definable benefit to the Unit/Department/University;
· Outstanding achievement in relation to workplace
diversity/employment equity or occupational health and
safety or ethical conduct and professional standards.
It should be noted that there is a higher level of
expectation in respect of higher level positions because
of the greater opportunities which exist for exercising
initiative.

One form only will be accepted for each group of nominators.
One of the group nominators must take responsibility
for obtaining the signatures and testimonials from the
other two nominators.

DECISION MAKING
Factors taken into account when determining the recipients
of the award, will include the number of obstacles or
degree of difficulty faced in the implementation or
achievement, the value of the definable benefits to
the University, the degree of originality, and the significance
of the impact to the wider University community. Endorsement
by the nominee's Head of Department/Unit/School/Division/Centre
will be a major consideration in the decision making
process. Awards will only be given for achievements
made in the twelve months preceding the closing date.
