Disposal of Contaminated/Hazardous Waste

The University of Wollongong has in place guidelines for the safe and environmentally friendly way in which contaminated or hazardous waste is disposed of.

Chemical Store Opening Dates 2009

The chemical waste store is located outside the western end of building 15 and it accepts waste for disposal every 2nd Wednesday (see schedule below) from 9am to 11am.

Biohazardous Waste Collection Dates 2009

Biohazardous waste is collected from the Building 35 loading dock and Anatomy Lab every second Monday (see schedule below), please ensure you have your waste presented before lunch to ensure collection.

Hazardous Waste Labels

What are hazardous waste labels

Hazardous waste labels clearly identify the particular type of waste that is being disposed of across the University. These labels are imperative for the safe disposal of all hazardous waste generated by activities conducted at the University.

Examples of the hazardous waste labels can be seen below:

Hazardous Waste Halogenated Waste
Biological Waste Non-halogenated Waste
Radiation Waste Aqueous Acidic Waste
Cytotoxic Waste Aqueous Alkaline Waste

How do you order hazardous waste labels

To order hazardous waste labels follow the steps below:

  1. Select the type of label you wish to order in line with the type of waste that you are disposing of from the list above; 
  2. Complete a 'Print and Distribution Services Requisition Form' and the 'Hazardous Waste Label Order Form';
  3. Forward the completed forms to your authorised hazardous waste contact for approval;
  4. Once approved, send the completed forms to Print & Distribution Services.

Who can order hazardous waste labels

Hazardous waste labels can only be ordered through the authorised hazardous waste contact in your area. Orders that have not been approved by the authorised contact person will be returned.

What if I need a hazardous waste label that is not listed

If you require a hazardous waste label that is not currently listed, please contact Environmental Services on 3081.

Waste Tracking Log

A Waste Tracking Log sheet is required for all waste containing dangerous goods or hazardous substances. Please download and submit the completed form with the hazardous waste. For further information contact local hazardous waste contacts, Environmental Services Manager on ext 3081 or OHS Coordinator on ext 3528.
