Dangerous Goods

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous goods are substances or articles classified by the United Nations based upon the characteristics they display. Generally speaking, this means that "chemicals and explosives" are grouped and labelled based upon the physical hazards they pose.

There are nine classes of dangerous goods:

Class 1 Explosives
Class 2 Gases (Flammable, Compressed/Non-Toxic, Poisonous)
Class 3 Flammable Liquids
Class 4 Flammable Solids
Class 5 Oxidisers & Organic Peroxides
Class 6 Toxic Substances
Class 7 Radioactive Substances
Class 8 Corrosive Substances
Class 9 Miscellaneous Dangerous Goods

Are there any special requirements for storing dangerous goods?

A risk management approach is required for the storage and handling of dangerous goods. Further information can be found in the guidelines.

Do I need a licence to store dangerous goods?

Changes to dangerous goods legislation replace the need for licensing.  Workcover must be notified of dangerous goods stored and handled in quantities exceeding the manifest quantities set by Workcover.
