Addressing Hazards and Risks in the Workplace

We all have an element of risk in our lives, whether it is driving a car, swimming at the beach or working in a laboratory. The OH&S Act and Regulation stresses the importance of Risk Management in the workplace as a way of ensuring the safety of employees, students and visitors.

Risk Management principles; hazard identification, risk assessment and control are the key focus of this session. Undertaking this course will ensure that you are competent in addressing hazards and risks in your workplace and in any situation.

UOW Alcohol Policy Information Session

The University's Alcohol Policy and associated Guidelines for the Use and Management of Alcohol at University Functions, provides management and staff clear directions on alcohol in the workplace.

This information session is designed to assist management and staff in meeting their obligations. It is highly recommended for staff organising any social functions, including Christmas parties.

Biosafety

This course addresses the complex issue of biosafety and gives a general overview of legislation, responsibilities, risk management and safe work procedures specific to working with microbiological organisms. 

The course is targeted at all researchers, both staff and post graduate students, and should be completed before commencing work involving microbiological organisms and other biological materials.

Competency assessment: Each participant is to successfully complete a small quiz at the end of the session.

Recommended For: All Research involved with microbiological organisms and other biological materials.

Building Warden Training

This training is for building wardens on campus so that they have the skills required to help evacuate a building in case of an emergency.

This theoretical training, required by Australian Standards, will include advice on emergency procedures and building warden’s responsibilities.

Recommended For: Current and prospective Building Wardens.

Chem Alert

This course is for anyone who uses chemicals at the University ranging from sulphuric acid to liquid paper and gives the participant the skills to use the University’s online chemical management system, Chem Alert. 

Participants will be able to search for a Material Safety Data Sheet and manage their chemical inventory.  Essential training for anyone using chemicals on a day-to-day basis!

Competency assessment: Each participant is to successfully complete a small quiz at the end of the session.

Ergonomics in the Workplace

The aim of this training session is to improve staff awareness of optimal workstation arrangements and work practices, to prevent occurrence of Occupational Overuse Syndrome, and to improve overall office OH&S.

This workshop is recommended for all staff who work at a computer workstation and will cover:

  • Principles of optimal posture including the efficient use of the musculoskeletal system
  • Causes of Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS)
  • Principles of OOS prevention
  • Use of a relevant checklist when assessing workstation set-up
  • Workstation furniture adjustment
  • Relevance of stretching in the office environment.

Please note that this course is also available for groups in specific areas on demand. Minimum group size is 6.

Recommended For: All staff.

Competency assessment: Each participant is to successfully complete a WorkSafe Australia Workstation Assessment Checklist form as part of this session.

Fire Extinguisher Training

This course provides comprehensive data to allow participants to develop an understanding of fire and associated dangers. It identifies various types of fires, the relevant type of equipment to use on each and the practical operation of the various types of fire fighting equipment installed in your premises.

The session will enable you to:

  • Define the types of workplace fires
  • Identify the types of extinguishers and hose reels installed in the workplace
  • Describe safe working practices
  • Identify the limitations of first attack fire fighting equipment
  • Define the application techniques for hose reels, fire blankets and fire extinguishers
  • Identify the specific dangers associated with first attack fire fighting
  • Implement after use requirements

Practical covers:

  • Instruction and use of fire extinguishers to extinguish various types of fires
  • Instruction and operation of fire hose reels and fire blankets to extinguish fire (where applicable).

Casual attire is suggested and participants must wear enclosed footwear, full length trousers/pants and shirt.

Hazardous Substances in the Workplace and Chem Alert

The course will cover the following:

  • Classification
  • Labelling
  • Packaging
  • Storage
  • Provision of information
  • Recognition of hazards
  • Route of entry and target organs
  • Control methods in line with Hazardous Substance legislation
  • Use of Chem Alert to search for material safety data sheets

Hazard and Incident Reporting

Effective reporting of hazards and injuries is crucial to the ongoing management of OH&S at the University. This session is aimed at all University staff members as everyone at the University has a responsibility to identify hazards. Ideally participants should have completed “Addressing Hazards and Risks in the Workplace”.

A new online hazard and incident reporting system was implemented at the University in 2006. The training session is being carried out in the ITS training labs so that people can familiarise themselves with the new computer format.

Recommended For: All staff.

Competency assessment: Each participant is to demonstrate satisfactory completion of a hazard/incident report form.

Laser Safety

The training session outlines the requirements for the safe operation of lasers.

This workshop is available at the request of specific Units and Departments.

Recommended For: Staff and students operating or overseeing laser use.

Manual Handling and Back Care

Statistics report that between 95 to 98% of all adults will experience at least one episode of back pain a year. Back injuries can be both painful and debilitating. Back injuries are also preventable. This course is designed to cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of manual handling techniques and the prevention of back injury.

Outcomes:

  • Identify risk and hazards in respect to back injuries
  • Identify strategies to deal with the risks/hazards identified
  • Express a general understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics of the back
  • Display an understanding of the physiological process of musculoskeletal injury
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of manual handling both theoretically and practically.

Please note that this course is also available for groups in specific areas on demand. Minimum group size is 8.

Recommended For: All staff.

Competency assessment: Each participant is to be able to identify manual handling risks by way of completion of the UOW Manual Handling Risk Assessment Checklist form.

Mental Health First Aid

The Mental Health First Aid training is offered with a view to improving general mental health literacy of staff. The course aims to better equip staff to identify and to deal helpfully with people with psychological and mental health issues.

The training includes information on how to refer people to appropriate sources of professional help when required.

It will cover the most common mental health problems such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Substance abuse
  • Psychosis (loss of touch with reality)
  • Suicide risk.

Participants will learn how to identify these problems and how to intervene appropriately without putting themselves or the other person at risk.

OH&S Principles for Workplace Advisory Committee Members

This course has been developed to give Workplace Advisory Committee (WAC) members or anyone who is interested in the principles of OH&S, an awareness of current OH&S legislation and how this relates to the University.

At the completion of this training members will be able to:

  • Understand key principles of the OHS Act and Regulation
  • Identify the key responsibilities of employers and employees for OH&S in the workplace
  • Understand the function and role of the WAC and the Central OH&S Committee in resolving OH&S issues and raising OH&S awareness
  • Identify the key systems and procedures of the University's OH&S system to provide a safe workplace.

This training is compulsory for members of Workplace Advisory Committees for OH&S.

OH&S Training and Assessing Workplace Competency

Training is an important part of the University of Wollongong's strategy to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all its employees. Training sessions are complimented by ensuring that a person is competent in a task/activity prior to them working unaccompanied.

This workshop is designed to provide participants with information regarding the content of the OHS training guidelines and how to implement these requirements in their workplace.

At the end of this session participants will be have an understanding of:

  • Categories of the OHS competencies
  • The process of preparing a training needs analysis
  • Methods of assessing competency
  • Key components of the competency assessment process
  • The process of recording competency
  • How to determination and duration of competency
  • This course is intended for staff that DO NOT hold a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104 or formerly BSZ40198)

Radiation Safety Training

This course aims to provide participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to use radiation safely as per legislative requirements.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to radiation physics
  • Interaction of radiation with matter
  • Hazards of radiation
  • Radiation units and dose
  • Radiation detection and measurement
  • Safety and exposure control with unsealed sources
  • Radioisotope laboratories
  • Emergencies and decontamination
  • Waste Management
  • Regulatory provisions
  • University radiation safety program

At the conclusion of the theory session participants will be able to:

  • Recognise properties of radiation
  • Know the effects and risks of exposure
  • Minimise exposure from sealed and unsealed sources
  • Learn radiation monitoring
  • Apply radiation safety principles and practices in their workplace

Following the theory session participants are able to attend a practical session which covers:

  • Contamination monitoring - wipe and portable monitor methods
  • Shielding
  • Decontamination of (sample) work

Recommended For:       Mandatory Training for technical and research staff involved in the use of radiation. This training is a requirement for those persons applying for a radiation licence.

Safe Work Procedures

Under the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Regulation (2001) and associated University safety programs, operations involving risk are to be controlled so that they are safe. One method of controlling risk is by having a safe work procedure outlining the task, associated hazards and steps required to control the risk. A practical activity of the completion of a safe work procedure is included in this course.

This workshop is available at the request of specific Units and Departments. To organise a training session please contact Professional and Organisational Development Services.

Competency assessment: Each participant is to demonstrate satisfactory completion of a safe work procedure to ensure that any high/medium risk activities are safe.

Senior First Aid

This is an accredited, Work Cover approved course providing the successful participant with First Aid Certification.

The content covers a comprehensive range of first aid issues through both theory and practical exercises. No previous experience or qualifications are required.

Participants will be required to complete a workbook which will need to be returned to Professional & Organisational Development Services one week prior to the course. The theory and practical exam is conducted on the same day.

Stress Management Techniques Seminar

This seminar focuses on addressing stress within the university working environment. It is a highly interactive session which incorporates discussion and practical exercises and is relevant to work and home.

Areas covered include stress buster activities, beating procrastination, time management and improving personal effectiveness.
