A range of stalls with information catering to the diverse needs of working parents.

The Expo will provide parents, parents-to-be, grandparents and carers with information to child rearing for ages 0-18 years. Representatives from a variety of community based and other organisations will be available to discuss services available in the Illawarra for under 5's, primary and secondary school aged children. 

- What do I do with my children in the school holidays?
- What services are available to assist me close to my home?
- What are some affordable options for entertaining the children?
- How do I help my child to transition to school?
- How do I keep my child healthy?
- What are the big issues impacting on teenagers?
- How do I help my child with a disability?
- How do I access information on multicultural issues?

A range of information on resources and how to access them will also be made available.

The Linking Women Network has invited Diane Olney, community nurse from the Woonona Cottage of the Area Health Service, along with a psychologist from the same Cottage, to share their expertise about common issues and support services, for parenting the under 5's. The presentation will be very informal, with time to ask questions and share experiences.

A light morning tea will also be provided. Fathers, grandparents and mothers with their young children are most welcome to attend.

Allan runs a 10 week workshop on parenting teenagers so this will be a snapshot of his larger program. Mothers, fathers, grandparents - anyone with an interest can come along.

Are you caring for a sick or ageing parent, partner of family member? This can be a very stressful time when you are worried, navigating your way through the medical system, trying to establish the best care arrangements, spending most of your 'spare' time as a carer and coming to work each day.

Dr Greg Barclay, a palliative care specialist consultant will be visiting to talk about the support available and how best to manage the medical side of caring.

Lynne Wright will talk about managing in the workplace and the support that is available to staff in these circumstances.

Come along and hear the personal stories of two of our women who have been lured from their home countries to live in Australian and work at the University of Wollongong .

Their stories will leave you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural diversity of our staff.

Dr Irina Verenikina – Senior lecturer, Faculty of Education Irina had worked for Russian Academy of Science, Moscow , before coming to Australia ten years ago. She will compare her experiences of being a woman & academic in Russia and Australia as well as share her personal observations of cultural differences in everyday and professional life.

Jinqi Xu – Client Service Representative, Student Central Jinqi Xu is from XI'AN , an old city of China , with history of 3000 years and it is the capital city of 11 dynasties. Jinqi Xu will delight us with stories of her home country and Australian experience.

Tuning Your Promotion Prospects

This workshop is the third in the Switched On series, which is an integrated development program for academic women developed by the EED Unit.

It is aimed at women working towards a promotion application in the next 12 months to 2 years, although women who have not attended this course in the past and are applying for promotion this year are welcome to attend.

Participants will:

  • understand how the promotion system works at UOW;
  • complete the workshop with an individual action plan; and
  • have established a campus wide support network of women working through the same issues.

The workshop will include a discussion session utilising a broad based panel experienced in academic promotion matters.

How do you do it? A Working Mothers Forum

At this event we will explore:
- understanding the common issues faced and shared by working mothers;
- key findings and some strategies on how to deal with these common issues;
- making choices that work with both your career and home life;
- how to be part of a relevant support network with whom to share and exchange ideas.

Maree Lipschitz BSc (Hons) Grad Dip Lib Sc is a skilled facilitator who has had her own training and facilitation business for 12 years, after working in the corporate sector for 10 years. In 2004, she teamed up with her close friend and executive coach, Virginia Herlihy, to design and implement 'How DO You Do It? - a series of forums for working mothers to connect and discuss ways to make it easier to combine both roles. The outstanding success of the program in four state centres of one of Australia 's largest law firms, had female partners and senior associates listing it as one of their 'exceptional experiences' of the year!  Maree lives in beautiful Bondi Beach , Sydney has been married to Martin for 20 years and is mum to Emily (11) and Elliot (6).
