Postgraduate Sponsorship Program

Staff can apply for a sponsored place in either the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) or any other postgraduate course offered by the University of Wollongong which is deemed relevant to the staff member's current position.

Academic Staff

Academic Heads Leadership Program

The program, which is based around a set of leadership competencies, has been designed to build on and develop the leadership capabilities of current and potential Heads and Associate Deans.

This program is intended to be complemented by other initiatives which provide development opportunities, including sponsorship on appropriate external leadership and management programs such as those provided by the Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee.

Performance Enhancement and Career Development Record

The Career Development Record is the vehicle by which the individual faculty member develops his or her own directions for career development. It is also a system by which the University will manage an agreed upon curriculum of development.

Equity Fellowships

Equity Fellowships have been established to assist staff facing difficulties in completing their PhD program because of equity issues. They are targeted in the main at academic women and Indigenous Australians. Funds may be used to cover one or more of the following relevant expenses for one semester:-

  • Release from teaching & other duties
  • research assistance
  • Child care

Introduction to Tertiary Teaching

All academic staff are encouraged to enrol in Introduction to Tertiary Teaching in order to extend their understanding of learning and teaching in universities and to formalise their teaching expertise.The University of Wollongong was the first in Australia to introduce a compulsory course for new academic staff. A number of universities are now implementing their own schemes.

Women in Commerce (WIC) Research Platform

WIC was established in 2004 for female researchers in the Faculty of Commerce who are interested in improving their research skills and who are willing to share their knowledge and experiences with other women. The network was developed with 4 key objectives.

Collective mentoring

  • Learning which publication outlets matter in which discipline.
  • Getting feedback on manuscripts.
  • Getting feedback on revisions of manuscripts.
  • Getting feedback on grant applications.
  • Learning how to review manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Debriefing after rejections.

Information transfer

  • Transfer of information from the University Research Committee to women in commerce (WIC).
  • Transfer of information from the Office of Research to WIC.
  • Exchange of research-relevant information (special issues of journals, grant opportunities, collaborative opportunities between researchers and with industry partners) between WIC.
  • Exchange of experiences between WIC.

Collaboration

  • Provide information on WICs research areas and potential opportunities for collaborative work.
  • Stimulate research collaborations.

Support

  • Learning from each other how to effectively plan and manage research work.
  • Learning from each other how to best manage the teaching : administration : research time management challenge.
  • Learning from each other how to manage the family : research time management challenge.

Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management) Program

The Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management) is a federal education strategy designed to enhance the quality of management in Australia. Participants who successfully complete this Program receive a nationally recognised qualification in Frontline Management. The Program is flexibly delivered in a self-paced format and conducted over twenty-six weeks. The Program consists of five core units of competency and three elective units of competency.

Development Program Assistance

Development Program Assistance provides an opportunity for experienced general staff members who are recognised for their exceptional contribution to the University to enhance their skills and knowledge by taking part in major career development opportunities outside the University. Development Program Assistance may be sought to support a planned development program based around:
i) a brief (not exceeding 4 weeks) series of visits to other institutions or organisations to observe best practice and define benchmarks, and to establish relevant senior contacts; and/or
ii) a period of work experience with another employer to gain relevant additional skills and experience.

The General Staff Leadership Program, introduced in 2006, is based around leadership skills and capabilities identified as critical development areas for senior managers.

The Planner is a formalised opportunity for discussion and planning of a range of important issues, including forward planning for the work unit, role clarity, constructive performance feedback and career development activities.
