Diversity Week Events
Monday 23rd March
OFFICIAL OPENING OF DIVERSITY WEEK
Following the Welcome to Country by Indigenous Elder Aunty Barbara Nicholson, and introduction by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gerard Sutton AO from the University of Wollongong, Chris Puplick AM, former NSW Anti-Discrimination and Privacy Commissioner will speak about Diversity, a journey towards understanding and respect.
Mr Graeme Innes AM, Human Rights and Disability Discrimination Commissioner will then formally launch Diversity Week 2009 and the new online program developed for students titled 'Responsibilities, Rights and Respect Online'.

DADHC Exhibition
The McKinnon Building will host an exhibition of art from artists who are part of the Department of Aging, Disability and Home Care.
Mr Graeme Innes AM, Human Rights Commissioner and Disability Discrimination Commissioner will open the exhibition.

BINGAY
Check out the Poster
BINGAY is a fundraising event hosted by the multi DIVA award winning drag queen, Mitzi Macintosh who will be accompanied by barrel girl, Naomi Palmer. Coming to Wollongong for the first time, Mitzi and Naomi will bring an exciting twist to the normal game of bingo, so bring your family and friends for a night of entertainment and help raise funds for the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON).

‘Informe’ Art Exhibition
informe, or formless is an exhibition about perspective and visual form. Using watercolour, drawing and installation Fatima Hijazi, Chris James and Katie Daniels present new work that explore the theme of formlessness. Through their individual practices, the three artists challenge conventions in perspective and visual form through issues of identity, space, cross-cultural encounters and gender stereotypes.
Place: Long Gallery, Faculty of Creative Arts - Building 25

Arts/Law Debate
Who is the smartest faculty? Come and watch professors, lecturers and students from both the Law and Art faculties battle it out!

Start off the afternoon in a healthy way by learning some of the basic skills and movements of Tai Chi.

Understanding autism through the movie: The Black Balloon
The Black Balloon (2008) is an Australian made, AFI award winning film starring Toni Collette, Rhys Wakefield, Luke Ford and Gemma Ward. The confronting story revolves around Thomas’ (Wakefield) need for a normal adolescent life but is unable to fit in due to his autistic older brother Charlie (Ford). Story reveals the journey of Thomas trying to balance his relationship with his girlfriend (Ward) and his family whilst dealing with the frustrations of Charlie’s unusual antics.

Commssa (Commerce Staff & Student Association) - Morning Tea
Commssa will be hosting a morning tea celebration for Diversity Week. Open to anyone who would like to join in and have a cup of tea/coffee and cake.

Blind Cricket
Blind Cricket will be held at the hockey fields at lunchtime. An entertaining game of blind cricket will be battled out between Uni students vs. staff members. Team members will be provided with glasses with different sight options from blind to visible.

Indigenous Arts and Crafts
Learn from our Indigenous artists some of the traditional techniques of Indigenous weaving. Wollongong TAFE students will teach and demonstrate basket weaving.
A BBQ will be held to raise funds for the Indigenous Games.

Louise Brand, Curator from the Wollongong City Gallery will lead a tour to view Indigenous art across the University. Visitors from outside the University will attend. We encourage UOW students and staff to attend.

Gender and Diversity Luncheon
An amazing opportunity to hear from some of the talented women on the University of Wollongong (UOW) campus and to learn from their experiences and research work.
Speakers include:
* Ms Pamela Murray-Jones, General Manager, ITC and Director, Marketing, Recruitment & Partnerships for the University of Wollongong, speaking on the role of women on boards
* Professor Elena Pereloma, professor of Physical Metallurgy at the University of Wollongong, speaking on women in Engineering and her own experience as an engineer.
* Professor Mary Barrett, professor of Management at the University of Wollongong, speaking on 'language, gender and your career'. Mary will cover debates and dilemmas for women as they negotiate communication at work.
* Ms Emma Dalton, PhD student, speaking on the under-representation of women in the Japanese National Parliament.
This event will be opened by Professor Rob Castle.

Multicultural Activities
Members of the Illawarra Committee for International Students & WUSA will be cooking up a storm, sharing the experience of different foods from a variety of cultures.
The Baha’i Society will hold Uni-Tea for Unity which allows students and staff to try free tea from different parts of the world. Plus, many more multicultural activities will be held to share the diversity of our campus.
This is also the perfect opportunity to sign up to the International Friendship Program, English Conversation groups or find out more about other programs.

UniCentre Cup Sports Day

Each year the UOW Clubs & Societies participate in the Lipton Ice Tea UniCentre Cup. This is a round robin competition where all clubs must play 5 sports on the day. Whilst all the teams performed like champions last year, the winner of the giant UniCentre Cup trophy was UOW Amnesty International, for the second year running. Who will take home the trophy in 2009? Spectators Welcome. Free BBQ Lunch, entertainment and prize giveaways throughout the day. There will also be a raffle to raise money for the Red Cross with first prize being a $500 STA Travel Voucher.
